Problems with the interpretation of the new back-pass rule caused problems to United's detriment, as on the hour, Lucas Radebe made a tackle and the ball was picked up by Martyn and the referee adjudged it to be a backpass. From the ensuing free-kick Wolfsburg full back Frank Greiner lashed the ball through a forest of legs to open the scoring. Roy Prager made the victory for the home side certain when he scored from a volley just before the end. Danny Granville replaced Ian Harte at Left Back at Half-Time and Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink replaced Harry Kewell after seventy-eight minutes and six minutes later David Wetherall replaced Lucas Radebe at Left Half.
